和果子(Wagashi)是一部分带有甜味的传统日式糖果糕点的专业术语。主要的原料包括糖、米、糯米、小麦粉等,并依照不同的口味添加不同的特殊食材。

日本人将奈良时代从中国唐朝传入的唐果子,主要为麻糬类的甜食和麻球一样的油炸糕点。内馅主要为红豆和芝麻,外皮为糯米所制。

经过改良过後的麻糬外皮变得色彩丰富,精致甜点的造型除了传承自中国的桃子、兔子造型,以樱花、叶子等植物造新的日式甜点也层出不穷。大小从原来的正好可以握在手里的大小,变成一口就可吃掉的大小。

由於日本的茶道喝的是苦涩的抹茶,所以和果子正好中和一下味觉,因此和果子也随著茶文化的兴起而流行於贵族之间。到了江户时代,京都的京都果子和江户的上果子两派之间的激烈竞争,带动了和果子制作技术的大幅跃进。
